Temples have been built under the command of the Lord throughout history. The Mormon Church has listened to the Lord's command and has heeded His call to build temples. Currently (May 2006), there are 122 operating temples with 5 under construction and 5 that have been announced.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly referred to as the Mormons, believe temples to be the "House of the Lord". They are sacred building where only worthy members of the Church can enter. There are no secret in the Mormon Temples, but they are sacred places where members of the Church can enter and learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to serve Jesus Christ and their fellow man. The covenants that are made in the temple make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

Mormons go to the temple because they believe that in those sacred places they can participate in religious ceremonies that are necessary for the salvation and exaltation into the celestial kingdom.

When worthy members of the Mormon Church enter the temple, they are expected to treat the temple with the utmost respect and reverence. All members wear white clothing which is symbolic of purity and reverence.

The Mormon Temple is not a church or even a cathedral. In a church Mormons attend Sunday worship or participate in other social and recreational activities. Churches are open to everybody. On the other hand, temples have many special rooms designed to accommodate special ceremonies such as eternal marriages, baptisms for the dead, and other instructional sessions. Participation in temple ceremonies requires membership in the Church.

Members of the community are able to enter the temple before it is dedicated. When a temple is completed, there is an open house, which last for several days, in which the general public can enter. Information is provided to explain the different functions and ceremonies performed in the temple and questions can be asked and answered. After the open house is completed, the temple is closed for cleaning and is later dedicated to the Lord.

Mormon temples are places of peace and reverence. When Mormons go to the temple they put away the cares of the world. In the temple they ponder and pray and open their mind to the influence of the Spirit of the Lord. In the temple Mormons feel the Lord's love and look for direction in their lives.
