Mormons believe that the purpose of Scriptures is to "testify of Jesus Christ and [to] help us to come unto Him and receive eternal life." The Mormons accept the following four books of scripture: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. These books are commonly referred to by Mormons as, the standard works.

The Bible has been a major influence in the Christian world, wherein it was instrumental in bringing about the Renaissance and the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Bible contains 66 books of sacred writings pertaining to God's revelations to man. This sacred book covers many centuries, from the time of Adam through the time when the Apostles of Jesus Christ lived. Doctrinal, historical, prophetic, and poetic materials are found within the pages of the Holy Bible.

Mormons believe that the writings in the Bible were perfect scripture in their original form. Meaning, that they were 'the mind and will of the Lord [and] his voice to his chosen people and to all who would hear it.' However, they believe that the Bible has not come down to us in perfect form due to, "deletion as a result of error and dishonesty which poured into various churches."

Because the Bible has been translated many times since Christ time, it is printed in different versions. In English, the King James Version of the Bible is the accepted scripture for the Mormon Church.

The Bible is divided into two sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is a sacred record of God's encounters with His covenant people in the Holy Land. It includes teachings of such prophets as Moses, Joshua, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel. Many prophecies in the Old Testament foretell of the coming of Jesus Christ as well as the ministry of Christ's disciples.

The New Testament records the birth, life, ministry and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It also tells of the establishing of His Church in that day. Along with the Book of Mormon, the Bible is a vital part in learning and studying the teachings of Christ.

Mormons believe that if the Bible is read in conjunction with the Book of Mormon and under the guidance of the Spirit, the 'plain and precious truths', which were lost, will be made clear to the reader.
